Prenatal Chronic Hypoxia in Rats Leads to Insulin Resistance and Hypertension in Adult Offspring

Abstract Background To investigate the effects of chronic intrauterine hypoxia on insulin resistance, hypertension, and correlation between them in adult offspring rats. Methods A total 25 pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into 4 prenatal (H) groups (10% ± 1% oxygen) a control group (21% oxygen). The H divided whole (1–21 day), early (1–7 mid (8–14 late (15–21 day) gestational (H1, H2, H3, H4, respectively) with being housed box for 3 hours per day. Five male 5 female each studied at 1 day, months, 6 months old. Blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, resistance index determined. Results mean pressure was higher further increased old compared to (P < 0.05). glucose homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) pregnancy (H1) (H2) significantly than those Fasting HOMA-IR positively correlated renal mass H2 lower decreased controls mRNA protein levels receptor, receptor substrate (IRS-1 IRS-2) kidneys H1 when Conclusions Chronic causes hypertension through poor growth environment, is associated hypertension.
